We get it! Your Puradown quilt or pillow is basically your best friend in winter. It keeps you warm, comfy, and cocooned like a burrito of dreams.
But here’s the thing: even the best feather and down products need a little TLC if they’re going to keep performing year after year. And no, that doesn’t mean tossing them in the wash with the towels.
Let’s break down how to care for your quilt or pillow properly, and when to call in the pros (that’s us).
First Things First: Can You Wash Feather & Down Bedding at Home?
While some feather and down products can be washed at home, doing it wrong can flatten the fill, trap moisture, or worse - break the delicate down clusters that make it so warm and lofty to begin with.
Unless you’ve got a commercial-sized washer, a very good drying setup, and nerves of steel... it’s risky.
How to Keep Bedding Fresh at Home:
-
Air it out monthly. Hang your quilt or pillow outside in the shade (not full sun) to freshen it up and restore loft.
-
Use a cover. A good quality quilt cover (see our other guide to quilt covers and sheets) or pillow protector will help reduce the need for frequent deep cleans.
-
Spot clean quickly. Minor spills? Dab gently with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Don’t soak. Hang outside in direct sunlight for as long as possible.
-
Fluff regularly. Give it a good shake and fluff to keep the down clusters from clumping.

Why Cleaning Beats Replacing (Every Time)
One of the biggest reasons we offer this service? Because buying quality should mean keeping it.
At Puradown, we’re all about long-lasting comfort, and proper care helps extend the life of your bedding.
That means less waste, fewer products in landfill, and more value for you.
Every topper, pillow or quilt you clean instead of replace is a win for your sleep and the planet.
How Often Should You Clean Feather & Down Bedding?
If you're sleeping with it every night (and we assume you are), your quilt or pillow deserves a refresh at least once a year.
-
Quilts: Every 12 months is the sweet spot for keeping things fresh, fluffy and allergen-free
-
Pillows: Every 6–12 months, depending on how much love (and drool) they’re getting
-
Mattress Toppers: Once every 1–2 years, unless you're using it nightly - then bump it up
Keeping to a regular schedule helps preserve the natural down, extend the life of your bedding, and most importantly… it just feels better.
